The Constant Thread ContinuesMay 11th, 2020
The world is facing one of the toughest and most uncertain times in history. Despite all of the unknowns, there is a constant thread – and that is the care that we provide for our sickest and most vulnerable patients, COVID-19 and otherwise. The pandemic has shown us that even when the rules of the game are upended, our work force adapts and stays in the game.
I would like to sincerely thank all of our employees – whether working on the front lines, behind the scenes, or at home – for adapting to the new, constantly changing world we live in so we can continue our mission of advancing health, even in a time of world distress. The collective team work and collaboration is one of our greatest strengths as an institution.
It’s timely that this week marks National Nurses’ Week and the World Health Organization’s Year of the Nurse and Midwife, to recognize one of many disciplines who comprise our dedicated care teams.
Our nearly 6,000 nurses and midwives make tremendous contributions to our institution, and, on a global scale, these amazing caregivers represent approximately 50 percent of the health care workforce. Today more than ever, during these trying times, nurses and midwives are critical members of our care teams.
Whether we work alongside them in clinical settings or home educating, researching or completing essential administrative tasks, we all appreciate their resilience and fortitude no matter what the pandemic brings.
COVID-19 has taken a toll on all of us – reducing our resources, trying our patience and, understandably, wearing us down emotionally. I share with you this quote, that I hope will reflect our journey through the pandemic:
“On the other side of a storm is the strength that comes from having navigated through it. Raise your sail and begin.” — author Gregory S. Williams
A silver lining of the pandemic is that it has changed our scope of possibilities. It has opened up many opportunities for us to re-think how we move forward, and how we reinvent compassionate care for our patients in a constantly changing health care environment.
Don’t forget to thank, or give a social media shout out to a nurse or midwife today.
