I’ve heard from many of you that you would like to hear more from me and other leaders, to better understand our future direction as a premier academic medical center. Over the coming months, the executive team and I will undertake a number of efforts to better define and communicate our vision for the coming years. This blog is one of these communication approaches. Today, I’ll simply outline my goals for this blog and provide an overview on topics that will merit further conversation.

I am new to use of a blog for communication and it may take a little time to get into a rhythm, but I will do my best to make this relevant, responsive and readable. I look forward to hearing from you and listening to your thoughts and comments and providing my thoughts on the topics that are of most interest to you. Some of the topics that I plan on taking a deeper dive into in future posts include:

What’s next for Michigan Medicine — It’s not an exaggeration to say that the health care industry continues to weather significant change. Our strategies have to change along with it. I’ll talk about our top priorities for 2020 and beyond and why Michigan Medicine will not only weather storms but continue to thrive.

What is our Vision? — We have begun an inclusive process with faculty, staff, learners, patients and donors to look out 10 years and provide input into what we want the vision to be for Michigan Medicine. All of you will have an opportunity to weigh in on the direction of that vision and the statement itself through a digital survey that we will be sending to all faculty, staff and learners later this year. We want to hear from you as we create a vision that we hope will resonate with everyone across the organization.

Our success is inexorably linked to our people — We recently began bringing together the priorities in all three parts of our tripartite mission under one strategic umbrella. In this framework, the entire executive team agreed that our top priority needed to be around our people. The priority is “Promote a Positive and Cohesive People Culture that is aligned with our Values.” You will hear a lot about cultural transformation this year—and all of the work around this is dedicated to improving our culture. From our new values to high reliability, to the overarching theme of accountability, we are making the improvements that many of you have asked for to further develop our high-functioning culture. It’s not only important for all of us who work here—but also for all of those we serve. Look forward to much more on this topic.

What’s on your mind — As I begin rounding throughout the campus, I am hearing great accomplishments, creative ideas, and powerful stories. I’ll be sharing some of those in this blog. I also want to hear from you through the comments section on the blog with feedback on my posts and ideas for topics you want to hear about. Your voice matters.


  • I think your efforts are commendable. I would like to encourage all employees, including physicians and other medical staff to try to be friendly, especially to patients and visitors. This can go a long way towards making them feel comfortable and valued.

    • Thank you for your comment, David. I agree with your sentiment. We see examples every day of how our connection with patients, visitors and each other can make a difference. Recently I shared a video where a patient describes how our Michigan Medicine care not only made him feel valued, but a part of our community.     I wish we could begin talking about a Quadruple Aim, rather than a Triple Aim, with employee well-being as an added priority. I suspect “burnout” is an issue in all departments, it certainly is in ours (Family Medicine), but new initiatives keep rolling out that add more to the “to do” list without consideration of the impact on the workload of physicians, RN’s, techs, support staff, etc.

    I understand that we have a new wellness champion, I am encouraged by that, but I think many of us would like to hear from him about what plans might be in this regard and to be asked about what we think could be done to improve workflow and satisfaction in our areas.

As shared stakeholders in health care, we too, along with patients want to have a helpful voice to aid the cause of not only improving health care within our department, but also sharing experiences and input with the building of new facilities about our programs.

  • Hello and Thank you! I appreciate you sharing your blog. I feel it is important for all Michigan Medicine employees to hear from you and to be asked for their feedback. I have worked in other hospital systems where the CEO communicates with the staff on an ongoing and frequent basis and this has always helped me feel that the CEO, now you, care about me and what is happening at my place of employment. Thank you again.

  • A 2-3 minute video every 2 or 4 weeks will be very valuable. Will minimize the sense of disconnect between the leadership and faculty.
