Diverse Roles Supporting One Shared Vision

What I love about our vision is that it encompasses all that we do – research, education and clinical care, and everything in between. It also recognizes the contributions of all of our faculty, staff and learners who have a role in achieving our mission to advance health to serve Michigan and the world.

This past March the leadership team developed a Long Form Vision to give everyone a sense of the big picture view of our vision – from supporting a state-wide network through our far-reaching partnerships to our community outreach programs, video visits and hospital at home programs. Getting a sense of the enormity of our work can be truly awe-inspiring.

However, getting a very up-close view can be equally intriguing.  I had the privilege of hearing how the vision personally resonated with individual employees here at Michigan Medicine and how it impacts their own day-to-day work from a few people while rounding throughout the organization over the past few months. By hearing about these individual contributions, I learned a lot about what it takes – as a larger community – to make our mission truly come alive for all of us.

I realize you don’t all have the opportunity to hear these stories like I do, so to get a sense of what the vision means for some of your co-workers, read this Headlines article.

No matter how diverse our roles are, it is important to share and align our vision together. By supporting our vision we can set our sights on our Strategic Priorities and Objectives which represent the most important goals for Fiscal Years 2023 -2025.

These goals are:

1.  Promote a positive and cohesive people culture that is aligned with our values

2.  Improve the value of the health care we deliver by building our “BASE”

3.  Create transformative knowledge that advances science and improves health

4.  Educate physicians and scholars who will advance health, science, and care delivery

5.  Be efficient and effective stewards of all our resources

6.  Grow strategically, independently and with partners to create alignment and coordination across the care continuum

For details about these goals and more information about our mission, vision and core values, visit the Path Forward website.

Thank you for all you do to support our Mission, Vision and our Core Values.

  • Dear Dr. Runge,
I would like to share my experience as an employee being in the hospital.
I was always taken care of. They didn’t know I was an employee once the ice was broken. I was treated with the utmost respect and the kindness of the Dr’s nurses, and CNA’s was very comforting. I have had some serious medical issues and have been in and out of the hospital since 6/2022. Never once did I have a bad interaction with any of the staff that took care of me. From the floor staff to cat scan/x-ray and the Dr’s. They were all amazing including the residents and medical students. It makes me proud to work for an institution like this. I have been employed by Michigan Medicine for 45 years this July. Thank you for the opportunity to share.

    • Cynthia, this is inspiring to hear. I am so glad you have experienced what it is like when our staff truly live our mission, vision and our values every day. And thank you for your 45 years of dedication to Michigan Medicine.

  • I absolutely love this simple yet powerful vision and message, and I think it summarizes beautifully what U of M strives for. As both a very happy employee and patient of U of M (both of my babies were born here too!), I can without a doubt say we as a community go above and beyond. The care and genuine kindness and knowledge of each and every staff is unparalleled, and I highly recommend UM to everyone and anyone. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this incredible community.

    • I am glad our Vision resonates with you, Tahra. I agree it is simple, but very powerful. Thank you for allowing US to be a part of your life. Thank you for all you do every day!
